Title: A Hidden Gem of Punk Rock History: CINOFRENIC (1979)
Here’s a blast from the archives for true aficionados of punk rock! Back in 1978, I had the opportunity to be part of a unique film originally titled CINOFRENIC. It was an experimental project that captured the raw, unfiltered energy of the punk scene at the time. I was billed as Paul Young in the film, and although it never reached a wide audience, it has lived on in the memories of those lucky enough to experience it.
Recently, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the film has resurfaced online under a new title: Shock Rock (1979). Thanks to an "Unknown" commenter in a YouTube thread, I discovered that this rare piece of punk rock history is now accessible for fans to rediscover and appreciate.
The film itself may drag a bit in its dramatic parts, but the footage of the bands is absolutely incredible—and rare! I and Cardboard Brains perform a few songs, including the unreleased track Furniture Girls, and I’m happy to say the sound quality holds up. The film also features legendary performances from other iconic bands of the era, including The Secrets, Willie English, The B-Girls or The Curse, and stunning footage of Mike Nightmare and the Ugly. For fans of raw, underground punk, this is a treasure trove of material that captures the rebellious spirit of the late '70s.
For those unfamiliar with CINOFRENIC, it’s a snapshot of a vibrant and rebellious moment in music and culture—a time when punk was not just a genre but a movement. Its DIY ethos and raw aesthetic embody the ethos of the scene, making it a must-watch for anyone passionate about the roots of punk.
If you’re a punk enthusiast—or just curious about the era—check out Shock Rock (1979) on YouTube. It’s a rare gem, and I’m thrilled it’s finally finding its audience.
Let me know what you think after you’ve watched it. Punk never dies—it just waits to be rediscovered.
